New kind of beetle found! By CBC staff!

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 12:02:14 PDT
New kind of beetle found! By CBC staff! Staff on the state-owned CBC Newsworld, where, suspiciously like Fox News Channel’s O’Reilly Factor, “The Spin Stops Here”! (-- or is that just on their “Politics” program?) apparently discovered the new creature. They called it the “GREENHOUSE BEETLE”. Most other people, like the folks at the National Post, which features the little bugger on their front page today, call it the Mountain Pine Beetle. Labcoats call it Dendroctonus Ponderosae. Bu

Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:50:34 PDT
Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up! The state-run media in Canada (and the citizen-owned media who do their best to compete with them) all lament, daily (with intra-day lament updates, all day long), the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting price of gas. (Of course they don’t have the foggiest clue what they’re talking about, but they pretend they do.) Even as I was writing this, the state-owned CBC did a story about the latest rise in gas prices. Apparently it’s getting h

College GOPers plugging the gaps

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 13:28:51 PDT
by Jay Stevens I just saw this report in the Montana Kaiman, where three U of MT College Republicans are http://www.montanakaimin.com/index.php/news/news_article/students_running_for_legislature/ challenging Democratically-held House seats] in Missoula. Yeah, good luck with that. Now, first of all, I’m thrilled that young people are this engaged with the political process that they want to join in the fray. But it’s pretty clear that Scott Martin – of the College Democrats – was spot-on wh

Interview with Bart Hess

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 11:45:20 PDT
I discovered the work of Bart Hess just a year ago, at the Salone del Mobile 2007. The video of his graduation project A Hunt for Hightech was shown as part of Family of Form, the exhibition that the Design Academy Eindhoven had organized in Milan that year. Just one video on a small screen and several people glued to it, fascinated and sometimes slightly horrified. The images showed mutant skins, breathing shoes, living furs and metallic gloves. My vocabulary is actually even more limited than

NYT’s Cohen: Forget Ethanol. Rising Food Prices Caused by Poor Eating Twice a Day

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 08:56:46 PDT

After listing the charges against bio-fuels, Cohen says "hogwash and bilge"-- and then admits he was somewhat wrong about ethanol's critics being somewhat wrong. "I’ll grant that the fashion for bio-fuels led to excess, and that some farm-to-fuel-plant c
